Maharashtra Clears Rs 842.85-Crore Pune Sewage Overhaul Under AMRUT 2.0

The approval locks in a PPP funding plan to upgrade plants to SBR standards for cleaner Mula-Mutha discharges.

Overview

  • Funding is split as ₹252.86 crore from the Centre, ₹210.71 crore from the state, ₹20.49 crore from PMC and ₹358.79 crore from a private partner, according to the state’s resolution.
  • The plan demolishes and rebuilds STPs at Bhairoba (to 200 MLD) and Tanajiwadi (26 MLD), upgrades units at New Naidu (115 MLD), Erandwane (50 MLD) and Vithalwadi (32 MLD), and enhances Bopodi from 18 MLD to 28 MLD.
  • Works include retrofitting with Sequential Batch Reactor technology to meet new CPCB discharge norms of BOD below 10 and COD below 50.
  • Tenders are under way for PPP execution, with scope also covering about 187 km of internal sewers, 45 km of trunk lines and 37 km of maintenance pipelines, plus compressed biogas systems at large plants.
  • Pune’s effective treatment capacity is 477 MLD today; JICA-funded projects are slated to add 396 MLD by 2027, with planning benchmarks of 1,072 MLD by 2037 and 1,450 MLD by 2047.
