Maharashtra Clears 24x7 Operations for Shops, Restaurants, Malls and Theatres

A labour department circular clarifies round-the-clock hours under the 2017 law to resolve disputes over local restrictions.

Overview

  • Establishments that sell or serve alcohol, including liquor shops, bars, permit rooms and hookah parlours, remain excluded from the relaxation.
  • Theatres and cinemas are now included among venues permitted to operate through the night.
  • Businesses keeping doors open all week must grant every worker a consecutive 24-hour weekly rest, as required by Section 16(1)(b).
  • Local administrations and police have been directed to enforce the clarification after complaints that 24-hour operations were being blocked.
  • Separately, the state is weighing labour-law changes, including a proposal to extend the maximum daily work limit to 10 hours and increase overtime ceilings.
