Maharashtra Clears ₹2,215 Crore Relief for 31.64 Lakh Farmers as Flood Rescues Intensify

Fresh IMD alerts keep relief operations on a war footing.

Overview

  • Officials say ₹1,829 crore has been sent to districts for rapid Direct Benefit Transfers, with deposits to farmers targeted within 8–10 days and crop-loss surveys to be wrapped up before Diwali.
  • At least eight deaths were reported in recent days as more than 5.5 lakh acres of farmland were submerged in Marathwada, with extensive damage to homes and livestock.
  • NDRF teams rescued 320 people in the last 24 hours across four districts while Army and IAF helicopters airlifted stranded residents, including 27 in Dharashiv, as dam releases reached about 70,000 cusecs to manage flows.
  • The new package is in addition to ₹1,339.49 crore approved earlier for 19.22 lakh farmers for July–August damage, with DBT underway for those assessments.
  • Opposition leaders and farm groups demand larger central aid and higher compensation, including calls for a ‘wet drought’ tag, per‑hectare payouts of up to ₹50,000, and a pause on loan recoveries.
