Maharashtra Civic Polls: Mahayuti Claims 68 Unopposed Wins as Mumbai Mayoral Battle Sharpens

Allegations of coercion and flawed nomination scrutiny after withdrawals point to court challenges ahead of the January 15 vote.

Overview

  • BJP’s Keshav Upadhye said 68 Mahayuti candidates, including 44 from the BJP, were declared elected unopposed across corporations, led by gains in Kalyan-Dombivli along with Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Panvel, Bhiwandi, Dhule, Jalgaon and Ahilyanagar.
  • Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS alleged pressure, money power and late acceptance of withdrawal forms beyond the 3 pm deadline, and they signaled plans to contest the process with election authorities.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated the next Mumbai mayor will be from Mahayuti and will be “Hindu and Marathi,” a stance that followed controversy over earlier remarks by BJP leaders and drew rebuttals from opponents.
  • NCP leader Nawab Malik said the party is contesting 94 Mumbai wards and asserted no mayor can be elected without NCP support, while announcing complaints to the State Election Commission over alleged returning-officer irregularities.
  • The Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance laid out campaign promises including a Rs 1,500 monthly ‘Swabhiman Nidhi’ for domestic and Koli women, Rs 10 ‘Maa Saheb’ kitchens, property-tax waivers on homes up to 700 sq ft, lower BEST minimum fares and new public health facilities.
