Maharashtra Cities Start Coordinated Water Rationing as Supply Is Cut

Lower post-monsoon rainfall and El Niño risk have prompted a state order to cut allocations and push municipalities to schedule shutdowns and reuse mandates.

Overview

  • Thane Municipal Corporation has scheduled a 36-hour complete suspension of water in multiple wards, during which distribution from the MIDC-run Jambhul treatment plant will be paused and residents are asked to store water and expect low pressure for one to two days after service returns.
  • Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation will suspend supply for 18 hours every week, with shutdowns beginning each Wednesday morning and continuing into the early hours of Thursday to meet the new conservation plan.
  • The State Irrigation Department has directed an initial 10% reduction in water allocations, and civic bodies must manage supplies through planned utilisation that could run through August 31, 2027 with further cuts possible if conditions worsen.
  • The STEM Authority ordered full use of treated sewage for non-potable needs such as parks and construction, and required industries to install systems to reuse or recycle at least 30% of their water to reduce demand on drinking supplies.
  • Officials say the measures respond to lower-than-expected post-monsoon rainfall, early monsoon withdrawal and potential El Niño impacts, and they warn the operational pauses and network adjustments may depress pressure for days and disrupt daily life for households and small businesses.
