Maharashtra Charity Commissioner Cancels Pune Jain Trust Land Deal, Orders Rs 230 Crore Refund

The order follows a joint request from the parties after days of street protests by the Jain community.

Overview

  • The commissioner revoked the April 4, 2025 sanction under Section 36(2) of the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, reversing the approval granted under Section 36(1)(a).
  • The trust and Gokhale Landmarks must cancel the sale deed and power of attorney executed in October 2025 and restore the property's title with the Public Trusts Registration Office.
  • The trustees were directed to refund Rs 230 crore to the developer after TDS once cancellation is formalised, with reports citing a total consideration of Rs 311 crore.
  • Gokhale Landmarks and the Seth Hirachand Nemchand Digambar Smarak Trust told the commissioner they wished to terminate the deal, and the developer announced withdrawal from the project.
  • The 3.5-acre Model Colony site includes a Jain boarding hostel and Mahavir temple, and although the commissioner saw no need for further inquiry given consent, political leaders continue to seek a high-level probe.
