Overview
- The government told the legislative Assembly that Mumbai has 10,684 public toilet blocks and 159,036 seats, equating to one seat per 46 men and 38 women, falling short of Swachh Bharat Mission’s 35:25 norms.
- Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde rejected Praja Foundation’s May report that estimated one seat serves 86 men and 81 women, citing updated BMC figures instead.
- Minister Uday Samant announced an official inquiry into the Praja Foundation report and appointed a committee to probe contractor performance on public toilets.
- Under Swachh Maharashtra Mission 2.0, the state has sanctioned 14,166 new latrines and 500 urinals for the BMC, with the first installment of funding already disbursed.
- BMC records show 82% of community toilets have water connections, 88% have electricity, and civic complaints received through official channels are resolved within 24–72 hours.
