Maharashtra Cabinet Doubles Honorarium for Emergency-Era Prisoners

The revision comes ahead of the Emergency’s 50th anniversary to honor those who fought for democracy.

Overview

  • Under the revised scheme, beneficiaries jailed for more than one month now receive Rs 20,000 per month and those jailed for less than a month receive Rs 10,000.
  • Surviving spouses of deceased detainees can claim half the honorarium by submitting fresh applications to district collectors within 90 days.
  • The cabinet also removed the minimum age-at-arrest requirement, allowing those arrested as minors to apply.
  • The government has earmarked Rs 28 crore to fund pensions for approximately 3,782 recognized detainees from April 2025 through January 2026.
  • First launched in 2018, the Gaurav Yojana was paused in 2020 by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and reinstated in 2022 by the current BJP-led administration.
