Maharashtra Backs TuTr Hyperloop Pilot Linking JNPT to Planned Vadhavan Port

The state frames the LIM-based corridor as a way to speed container evacuation from Mumbai’s main port, with plans still at an early stage.

Overview

  • On August 19, the Maharashtra government signed a strategic agreement with TuTr Hyperloop at Mantralaya to pursue a cargo hyperloop pilot.
  • The proposed link would connect JNPT in Navi Mumbai to the planned Vadhavan Port in Palghar using a Linear Induction Motor system.
  • Officials say the corridor targets faster container evacuation from India’s busiest container port, with JNPT handling over half of containerised cargo and Vadhavan designed for 250 million tonnes annually.
  • TuTr is an IIT Madras–incubated startup, with IIT Madras and IIT Bombay slated to provide technical support for the pilot.
  • The pact was announced alongside 10 MoUs worth Rs 42,892 crore with an estimated 25,892 jobs, while construction plans, financing, regulatory clearances and timelines were not disclosed and the technology remains unproven commercially.
