Maharashtra Approves Merger of Six Cantonment Boards With Neighboring Municipalities

The integration moves ahead under Defence Ministry guidelines with a three-month timeline to unlock funding through district planning committees, transfer civic services to municipalities, safeguard military installations.

Overview

  • Maharashtra government and Defence Ministry have formally approved merging six of the state’s seven cantonment boards into local municipal bodies, exempting Dehu Road Cantonment for strategic reasons.
  • Pune and Khadki cantonments will join the Pune Municipal Corporation while the Aurangabad cantonment merges into the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation.
  • Deolali and Ahmednagar cantonments will be reconstituted as independent municipal councils and Kamptee will be integrated with the Yerkheda Nagar Panchayat.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that all administrative formalities be completed within three months pending final clearance from the central government.
  • Development funds for the newly merged areas will be channeled through district planning committees and municipal authorities must submit proposals under Defence Ministry guidelines.
