Maharashtra Approves 268 AC Locals, Underground Line 11, Thane–NMIA Link in Transport Push

Procurement awaits Central clearance, keeping timelines conditional.

Overview

  • An infrastructure cabinet subcommittee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cleared the purchase of 268 fully air-conditioned suburban trains under MUTP Phases 3 and 3A with fares set to match non-AC services.
  • The new rakes will feature closed doors and metro-style systems and will replace older open-door trains in phases once Central Government approval enables procurement.
  • Mumbai Metro Line 11, a 16-km fully underground route from Wadala Depot to the Gateway of India, was approved at an estimated Rs 24,000 crore with funding to come from JICA.
  • Capacity upgrades for Pune include third and fourth tracks on the PuneLonavala suburban corridor and two additional Pune Metro stations at Balajinagar–Bibwewadi and SwargateKatraj.
  • The package also includes a 25-km elevated road linking Thane to Navi Mumbai International Airport, a Nagpur ring road and planned township, and a BEST joint-development commercial complex to raise revenue.
