Maharashtra Announces Rs 6,000 Diwali Gift and Rs 65 Crore Monthly Funding to Clear MSRTC Arrears as Unions Pause Sit-In

The decision averts a planned indefinite sit-in following union assurances on arrears.

Overview

  • Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde unveiled the package after talks with employee unions at Mumbai’s Sahyadri Guest House alongside Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
  • Around 85,000 MSRTC employees will receive a one-time Rs 6,000 festival grant, backed by an estimated Rs 51 crore state allocation.
  • The state will provide Rs 65 crore every month so salary hike arrears from 2020–24 are paid in instalments beginning with this month’s salary.
  • Eligible staff may opt for a Rs 12,500 Diwali advance, for which MSRTC has requested Rs 54 crore from the government.
  • The workers’ joint committee has suspended the October 14 protest, with remaining demands to be reviewed within three months and revenue measures such as PPP-based land development under consideration.
