Overview
- Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar inspected Mahim Fort on Thursday with officials from the BMC, the Archaeology Department, PWD, heritage consultants and Mumbai Police.
- Conservation, preservation and beautification will be executed jointly by the BMC, its consultants and the Archaeology Department across the roughly three-acre coastal site.
- The BMC’s G North Ward is coordinating a formal handover with the Union Customs Department, which currently holds possession of the fort.
- Conservation architect Vikas Dilawari has been engaged to prepare the detailed project report and oversee works, with a VJTI expert advising on structural reinforcement needs.
- Encroachment clearance in the area has reopened access around the fort, and officials say the effort will also improve public access to accurate information about the site’s heritage.
