Magnitude 7.4–7.6 Quake Off Mindanao Triggers Tsunami Alerts and Evacuations

The tsunami threat for Philippine coasts later eased, with damage checks and relief preparations continuing.

  • Seismology agencies reported a powerful offshore earthquake near Manay, Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. local time, with initial magnitudes ranging from 7.4 to 7.6 and differing depth estimates.
  • Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of the Philippines, Indonesia and Palau, with forecasts of waves up to 1–3 metres in some Philippine bays and up to 1 metre in neighboring coasts.
  • Authorities ordered immediate coastal evacuations and suspended classes and work in affected provinces as aftershocks were recorded, including several in the magnitude 5–6 range.
  • Local officials reported damage to homes, schools, roads and bridges in Davao Oriental, along with power and communications disruptions, and at least one death was confirmed by a civil defence official.
  • President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said assessments are underway and that search-and-rescue and relief operations are being readied, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later indicated the tsunami threat to the Philippines had passed.
