Magnitude 7.0 Offshore Quake Shakes Northern Taiwan, No Major Damage Reported

Officials cite the quake’s offshore, intermediate depth for wide shaking with limited disruption.

Overview

  • Taiwan’s weather agency reported a magnitude 7.0 quake at 11:05 p.m. local time about 32 km east of Yilan at roughly 73 km deep, while the USGS measured it at 6.6–6.7.
  • Shaking reached intensity level 4 in Taipei, Yilan and Hualien, was felt across much of the island, and was reported as far as Hong Kong.
  • No tsunami alert was issued for Taiwan as authorities continued assessments with no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
  • Rail services briefly paused or slowed, including temporary stops for some high-speed trains and reduced speeds on Taipei and Taichung metros, while more than 3,000 homes in Yilan briefly lost power.
  • TSMC conducted precautionary evacuations at a small number of facilities with systems operating normally, and officials warned of potential aftershocks around magnitude 5.5 to 6.0; Japan issued local advisories for parts of Okinawa.
