Magnitude 7.0 Offshore Quake Rattles Taiwan’s Northeast

Officials report widespread shaking with no immediate reports of serious damage.

  • Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration measured a magnitude 7.0 quake at 11:05 pm local time, about 32 km east of Yilan at roughly 73 km depth, with intensity level 4 recorded in Taipei, Yilan and Hualien.
  • Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, and emergency teams began inspections with warnings that aftershocks are possible.
  • International seismic centers reported slightly lower magnitudes, with the USGS and EMSC listing the event around 6.6–6.7 at an intermediate depth.
  • Transport and utilities saw brief disruptions, including four Taiwan Railway trains suspended in Yilan, Taipei Metro operating at reduced speed for about 20 minutes, and power briefly lost for more than 3,000 homes in Yilan.
  • A small number of TSMC facilities conducted precautionary outdoor evacuations, while tsunami monitoring found no threat to Taiwan as Japan issued a limited advisory for parts of Okinawa and India’s INCOIS reported no risk.
