Magnitude 6.7 Quake Strikes Northern Japan as Tsunami Advisory Is Issued

Japan's meteorological agency raised the initial 6.5 estimate to 6.7, with damage and wave assessments still underway.

Overview

  • The quake hit off the east of Aomori around 11:44 a.m. local time at an estimated depth of about 20 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
  • A tsunami advisory covers Pacific coasts of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and the Pacific side of Hokkaido, with waves of up to roughly one meter possible.
  • Officials had not confirmed injuries or damage linked to this tremor at the time of reporting, and coastal monitoring is continuing.
  • The shock follows a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake earlier in the week that injured more than two dozen people and triggered evacuation orders for over 100,000 residents.
  • JMA has noted a low probability, around 1 percent, of a magnitude 8 or greater earthquake this week as part of ongoing seismic risk guidance.
