  • The earthquake struck at 08:43 local time with an epicenter near Parque Fray Jorge/Ovalle, as Chile’s seismology center reported magnitude 5.6 and Argentina’s INPRES reported 5.5.
  • Senapred listed Mercalli intensities up to VI in towns such as Ovalle, Canela and Illapel, with lower intensities reported in the Santiago area.
  • SHOA said the event did not meet conditions to generate a tsunami on Chile’s coast, and Senapred reported no damage, casualties or basic service interruptions.
  • In Argentina, the shaking was strongly felt across Greater Mendoza, where offices activated evacuation protocols and emergency teams began inspections.
  • Peru recorded separate quakes the same day, including a magnitude 3.5 near Chilca in Lima at 03:30 and a magnitude 4.2 near Punta de Bombón in Arequipa at 19:05, according to the IGP.
