Magnitude 5 Quake Near San Marcos, Guerrero Triggers Mexico City Alert, No Damage Reported

Officials linked the pre-dawn event to the aftershock sequence from the Jan. 2 magnitude 6.5 quake as seismologists refined the reading from early estimates to a final 5.0.

Overview

  • The quake struck at 00:42:56 local time with an epicenter about 17 kilometers southwest of San Marcos, Guerrero, at roughly 5 kilometers depth, according to the National Seismological Service.
  • Mexico’s early-warning system activated in seven cities, including Mexico City, providing lead times ranging from 8 to 59 seconds before the shaking.
  • Mexico City authorities initiated standard protocols with five Condor helicopter overflights and inspections of infrastructure and the Metro system, reporting no affectations and largely light or imperceptible shaking.
  • The National Civil Protection agency reported no injuries, fatalities, or damage to strategic infrastructure and coordinated checks with Guerrero officials, who logged “Sin Novedad” across multiple Costa Chica municipalities.
  • Roughly 34 minutes earlier, a separate magnitude 5.6 quake occurred south of Chetumal, Quintana Roo, which authorities noted was on a different tectonic setting and unrelated to the Guerrero event.
