Overview
- The USGS measured the mainshock at magnitude 4.9 at 5:56–5:57 p.m. PT about 12 miles northeast of Indio at a depth of roughly 1.8–1.9 miles.
- At least 17 aftershocks were logged by early evening, including magnitudes 3.4 and 3.3 in the same area.
- Riverside County Fire Department and Palm Springs police said initial checks found no reports of major damage or injuries.
- Thousands of residents filed “Did You Feel It?” reports, with shaking noted from the Coachella Valley to San Diego and as far as Thousand Oaks.
- ShakeAlert issued regional notifications and apps such as MyShake delivered seconds-early warnings as authorities urged drop, cover and hold on.
