Magnitude 4.6 Quake Shakes Kutch Before Dawn, No Damage Reported

State seismologists logged a shallow event near Rapar, with agencies tracking aftershocks in the quake-prone rift basin.

Overview

  • ISR measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.6 at 4:30 am IST, placing the epicentre about 22 km west-northwest of Rapar at roughly 5 km depth.
  • NCS separately reported a magnitude 4.4 event at 23.65°N, 70.23°E with a depth of 10 km in Kachchh.
  • District authorities said there were no injuries or damage to property following the early-morning tremor.
  • ISR noted two subsequent tremors of magnitude 2.5 and 3, and a Kutch University geologist said monitoring recorded 17 smaller events by noon and indicated rupture on the Northern Wagad fault.
  • The region’s risk remains elevated given its active faults and history, including the 2001 Kutch earthquake that killed about 13,800 people and injuries to 167,000, as well as recent research highlighting high crustal deformation along major fault systems.
