Magnitude 4.6 Ica Quake Follows M5.8 Near Arequipa, No Damage Reported

Officials urged preventive inspections in a high-risk subduction zone.

Overview

  • IGP reported a magnitude 4.6 event at 6:01 a.m. on Sept. 24 located 20 km south of Marcona in Ica at a depth of 28 km.
  • Censis-IGP earlier recorded a magnitude 5.8 quake at 12:39 p.m. on Sept. 23, 60 km southwest of Lomas in Caravelí, Arequipa, with intensity IV.
  • A separate magnitude 4.5 tremor hit at 4:05 p.m. on Sept. 23, 53 km south of Marcona in Nazca, Ica, with intensity II–III at 22 km depth.
  • IGP and Indeci said there were no casualties or material damages reported from the series as of the latest updates.
  • Indeci asked local authorities to carry out preventive inspections of schools, health centers and housing, and agencies advised residents to maintain emergency plans and kits in this Pacific Ring of Fire region.
