Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake Near Mount Spurr Raises Eruption-Trigger Concerns

Scientists are analyzing whether the quake could influence magma movement beneath the Advisory-level volcano.

Overview

  • The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Petersville, roughly 86 miles from Mount Spurr.
  • The Alaska Earthquake Center said the tremor struck at 10:38 a.m. local time, 52.4 miles deep and 34 miles north of Skwentna.
  • Nearly 200 reports of shaking came from Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna region, where tremors were felt more than 100 miles from the epicenter.
  • Mount Spurr remains on Advisory status for low-level unrest, and the Alaska Volcano Observatory says such seismic fluctuations are common and an eruption remains unlikely.
  • The Broad Pass thrust fault beneath Petersville poses an independent seismic hazard that could produce earthquakes up to magnitude 7.8.
