Magnitude 4.2 Quake Off El Ejido Rattles Almería and Granada

Spain’s National Geographic Institute confirmed a very shallow tremor in the Alborán Sea consistent with the area’s frequent seismic activity.

Overview

  • The quake struck at 22:38 UTC on October 29 with an epicenter in the northern Alborán Sea off El Ejido, according to the National Geographic Institute.
  • It measured magnitude 4.2 at a depth of about 2 kilometers, a shallow focus that can make shaking more noticeable over nearby coastal areas.
  • Reported intensity reached IV in Las Cabañuelas and III in several towns across Almería and parts of Granada, including Adra, Roquetas de Mar, Viator, Albuñol and Calahonda.
  • Residents described furniture and lamps moving and shaking that lasted roughly 10 to 12 seconds in social media posts.
  • No injuries or damage had been reported as of publication, and officials continue to monitor activity in this Eurasia–Africa plate boundary region, which saw a stronger M5.5 off Cabo de Gata-Níjar on July 14.
