Overview
- A magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit 37 km west of Huacho on Thursday at 14:37:59 local time with a reported depth of 48 km, according to IGP/CENSIS bulletin RS 2026-0735.
- The movement was felt weakly at intensity II in Huacho and local authorities have confirmed no material damage or casualties.
- The IGP reported several small quakes across Lima and other regions in the days around Oct. 10–16 and said its national network continues real‑time monitoring of seismic activity.
- Sismologist César Jiménez Tintaya warned that seismic energy has been building along the central coast since the 1746 megathrust event and that much larger earthquakes remain possible over long timeframes, with estimates he cited near magnitude 8.5–8.8.
- INDECI and municipal officials urged residents to keep emergency kits ready, identify safe zones, and follow official channels for updates as monitoring continues and small tremors do not eliminate the long‑term risk of larger quakes.
