Madrid Sets November 2026 Opening for A-5 Tunnel as Work Advances

The cut-and-cover project will bury the A-5 beneath a new 80,000-square-metre green corridor to reconnect Latina neighborhoods.

Overview

  • City officials report 5,869 piles installed, equal to 84% of the total, with 37,466 square metres concreted and roughly 300 metres of the 3.8-kilometre tunnel completed.
  • Surface traffic remains open with two lanes in each direction during construction, while nine pedestrian crossings are closed in the current phase.
  • The tunnel will connect with the M-30 subways at Avenida de Portugal and provide three lanes per direction, with central lanes configured for bus-VAO using variable signage.
  • Municipal projections point to a 90% drop in surface vehicles, enabling a continuous pedestrian boulevard to Avenida del Padre Piquer with expected gains in air quality and road safety.
  • Plans include a 3.5-kilometre bidirectional, signalised bike lane from Calle Illescas to the Avenida de Portugal route linking to Madrid Río, plus an expansion of pedestrian links from 16 to 33.
