Madrid Reports 21 Avian Flu Foci as Cantabria Confirms Three New Wild-Bird Cases

New restrictions target spillover from migratory birds through the winter.

Overview

  • Madrid’s latest detection in Colmenar Viejo on December 12 raises the regional tally to 21 confirmed foci since late September, most in wild birds.
  • The region has widened protection zones and imposed bans on hunting decoys, outdoor rearing and bird gatherings while tightening biosecurity on poultry farms.
  • The Central Veterinary Laboratory in Algete confirmed the Getafe stork die-off and other locations as highly pathogenic avian influenza.
  • Cantabria recorded positives in a cormorant, a gull and a mallard in Solares, San Vicente de la Barquera and Gama, bringing its total to seven, with no domestic poultry cases.
  • A national BOE order requires confining outdoor-reared poultry, with Cantabria applying the measure through March and urging the public to report dead or moribund birds to 112 without contact.
