Madrid Region Starts ETA History Workshops in 22 Schools

Sessions feature victims’ testimony under a program led by Ego Non with regional backing.

Overview

  • The Family, Youth and Social Affairs and Education chiefs presented the 50-minute workshop at Colegio Nueva Castilla in Vallecas.
  • The series targets students in the final year of secondary school and in baccalaureate across 22 publicly funded centers this term, with sessions extending into next year.
  • The workshops, developed by association Ego Non, include images and testimonies from ETA victims, and most students did not recognize figures such as Miguel Ángel Blanco, Gregorio Ordóñez and José Antonio Ortega Lara.
  • Education union CCOO Enseñanza Madrid and the Francisco Giner de los Ríos parents’ federation say the rollout lacked consultation and describe the proposal as political or unnecessary.
  • Regional officials frame the effort as civic education aligned with existing teacher training and recent curriculum updates, while organizers cite decades of violence with 853 killed and more than 7,000 wounded.
