Madrid Plans June–October 2026 Restoration of Fuente de Cibeles

Work will tackle accumulated grime, structural cracks and metal corrosion to preserve the 1781 monument under Madrid’s heritage conservation strategy.

Overview

  • The restoration is scheduled from June to October 2026 with a budget exceeding €350,000.
  • A 14-week, €16,000 conservation study completed in May 2025 identified dirt buildup, fissures and severe iron oxidation.
  • Remedial actions include targeted stone cleaning, biocidal application, joint sealing, metal consolidation and a hydrophobic coating.
  • Designed by Ventura Rodríguez and inaugurated in 1781, the fountain is a protected Bien de Interés Cultural within the Paisaje de la Luz UNESCO site.
  • The intervention is part of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid’s wider effort to safeguard and enhance the city’s cultural heritage.
