Overview
- City officials authorized works between Puerta de Alcalá and Plaza de Cibeles, with construction scheduled from early February 2026 through the first quarter of 2027.
- Traffic will be reconfigured to two general lanes plus a bus lane in each direction, with a segregated south-side bike lane raised to sidewalk level and widened to 2.6 metres.
- A 250-metre central promenade will be created to improve the approach to the monument, alongside wider pavements and renewed granite paving and asphalt.
- Greening plans restore the historic double tree alignment with 57 new large trees on Calle Alcalá, with six additional trees to be planted on nearby Alfonso XI after converting parking to parallel.
- The scheme also updates Plaza de la Independencia with new pedestrian crossings, a lighting study for the Puerta de Alcalá, a bike link toward Serrano, LED heritage-style lamps, reorganized terraces, and accessibility upgrades.
