Madrid Metro Ends 2025 With All Lines Running as Line 6 Automation Enters Installation Phase

The shift follows months of works that upgraded power and platforms to ready Line 6 for driverless service.

Overview

  • Service on Line 6 has been fully restored after more than 200 days of staged closures to renew track, raise traction voltage to 1,500 V DC and prepare stations for automation.
  • The first platform screen doors will be flown in from China in late January, starting installation at Legazpi before a progressive rollout across 28 stations under a five‑year contract valued at €104.12 million for doors, rising to €187 million with signaling.
  • From January 7, Line 6 will close at 23:00 Sunday to Thursday to allow night works, with free replacement buses running from 23:00 to 01:30 and usual late hours maintained on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Forty new CAF trains designed for the upgraded voltage are scheduled to begin testing around July next year and carry passengers in 2027, offering wider cars, about 17% more capacity, higher speeds up to 110 km/h and a cab‑less front with a panoramic view.
  • This year also saw Line 7B reopen after a €117.19 million rehabilitation, the Line 3 extension to El Casar linking with MetroSur and Cercanías C‑3, active works to extend Line 5 to the airport and Line 11 to Conde de Casal, and continued station projects including the Bernabéu rebuild and Begoña’s completed accessibility upgrade.
