Madrid Marks La Almudena With Mass, Procession and Plaza Mayor Pastry Tasting

City organizers combine solemn rites with folk culture, a public pastry tasting, traffic adjustments, plus a Monday-only local holiday.

Overview

  • The 11:00 a.m. solemn Mass at the Cathedral is presided by Cardinal José Cobo, with city and regional leaders in attendance and the subsequent procession following Bailén, Mayor, Santiago and Requena.
  • From 12:30 p.m., more than 1,000 portions of the traditional Corona de la Almudena are offered to the public in Plaza Mayor in collaboration with ACYRE Madrid.
  • Temporary traffic cuts affect central streets along the procession route, with EMT bus lines 3, 148 and M3 modified, and the city advises avoiding private vehicles in the area.
  • The program features broad folk participation, including an 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. gaita and dulzaina gathering on Paseo del Prado with around 200 performers and castizo music in Plaza Mayor.
  • Madrid observes a municipal holiday on Monday, November 10, transferred from the patronal day since November 9 falls on a Sunday, applying only within the city.
