Madrid Celebrates La Almudena With Mass, Procession and Free ‘Corona’ Pastry as City Holiday Shifts to Monday

City Hall moved the patronal day’s observance to November 10, creating a long weekend only within the capital.

Overview

  • At 11:00, Cardinal José Cobo presides the main mass on the Almudena Cathedral esplanade, followed by a procession along Bailén, Mayor, Santiago and Requena before returning to the temple.
  • Traffic closures and EMT adjustments are in place around the route, with bus lines including 3, 148 and M3 modified during the central events.
  • ACYRE prepared and handed out more than 1,000 portions of the traditional Corona de la Almudena in Plaza Mayor around 12:30, alongside castizo music by Los Castizos.
  • The municipal program, running November 6–9, features free processions, pasacalles and concerts, including the Patronas 2025 series and a gaita and dulzaina gathering with about 200 participants on Paseo del Prado.
  • Culinary initiatives include ASEMPAS crowning Confitería Riojano, Formentor and Pastelería Mifer in its best coronas contest, and bakery Turris gifting coronas to people named Almudena from November 7 to 9.
