Madrid Approves Calle Alcalá Boulevard With Work to Start in Early February

Heritage authorities, including UNESCO, have endorsed the redesign to integrate the Puerta de Alcalá into pedestrian public space.

Overview

  • The city set a €6.1 million budget, with construction running from the first week of February through the first quarter of 2027.
  • The plan reconfigures Calle Alcalá with a 250-meter central promenade 3.8 meters wide, two general lanes plus a bus lane in each direction, and a curb-level segregated cycle track on the south side.
  • Sidewalks widen, 57 large trees restore the historic double alignment, and new granite paving, heritage-style LED lighting, furniture and terrace layouts upgrade the streetscape.
  • Disruptive operations are scheduled chiefly for June and August after coordination with the Mobility area to limit traffic impacts.
  • UNESCO’s ICOMOS praised the project’s benefits and suggested tweaks such as one-way bike lanes on both sides, careful control of terraces and lighting, and a possible eastward extension; separately, Alcalá de Henares plans more than €4 million in neighborhood works this quarter.
