Overview

  • Line 6, Madrid's busiest metro route, will undergo phased closures starting May 31, with the western section closed until September 12 and the eastern section from September 13 to December 31.
  • The automation project aims to improve capacity, reliability, and efficiency, with fully driverless trains scheduled for operation in 2027.
  • Free EMT bus services and shuttles with 3–5 minute frequencies will replace metro service during the closures to minimize passenger disruption.
  • Key infrastructure upgrades include track superstructure renewal, ballast replacement with concrete platforms, voltage enhancement to 1,500 V, and asbestos removal.
  • Over 2,000 operatives will work in shifts around the clock to meet the ambitious schedule, with the full line reopening on January 1, 2026, using conventional trains.
