Madras High Court Restricts Chennai Sanitation Protests to Designated Zones

The court barred protests from Ripon Building pavements as hearings resume on the Rs 276 crore sanitation outsourcing dispute.

Overview

  • A bench led by Chief Justice Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan ruled that workers must confine protests to police-approved sites and vacate pavements outside Ripon Building.
  • The strike entered its 13th day as sanitation workers maintained a round-the-clock sit-in opposing the June 16 award of a Rs 276 crore contract for Zones 5 and 6 to a private firm.
  • Greater Chennai Corporation deployed about 1,200 contract labourers and staff from other zones in overnight drives on August 11–12, clearing over 650 metric tonnes of accumulated waste.
  • Municipal Administration Minister K. N. Nehru said four rounds of talks have led to the return of around 300 workers and affirmed that none have been dismissed, appealing for the remaining staff to resume duty.
  • The legal challenge continues with a writ petition under Section 82 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act and a pending Industrial Tribunal referral, and the state has sought time to file a corrected counter-affidavit.
