Madras High Court Orders Tamil Nadu Minister I. Periyasamy to Face Trial in Disproportionate Assets Case

The court reversed a 2012 discharge order, directing a six-month, day-to-day trial of the minister and his family on allegations of amassing ₹2.01 crore beyond known income sources.

According to DVAC, the minister and his family amassed disproportionate assets worth ₹2.1 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was a minister in the K Karunanidhi government. (Facebook: Saidai Sampath)

Overview

  • Justice P. Velmurugan of the Madras High Court overturned the discharge of I. Periyasamy, his wife P. Suseela, and sons P. Prabhu and P. Senthilkumar in a 2012 disproportionate assets case.
  • The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) alleged that the family accumulated ₹2.01 crore in assets between 2006 and 2010, during Periyasamy's tenure as Minister for Revenue and Prisons.
  • The High Court directed a special court in Dindigul to frame charges and conduct a day-to-day trial, to be completed within six months.
  • This ruling follows DVAC's 2018 criminal revision petitions challenging the Dindigul Chief Judicial Magistrate’s 2012 decision to discharge the accused.
  • The decision aligns with a similar April 23 ruling against Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan in another high-profile disproportionate assets case.
