Madras High Court Orders All-Women SIT for Anna University Assault Case

The court criticized police for victim-blaming and FIR leaks, directing compensation and protective measures for the survivor.

The Madras High Court established an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) of IPS officers to handle the Anna University sexual assault case and the FIR leak investigation.
The Tamil Nadu government was ordered to compensate the survivor with ₹25 lakh for the trauma caused by the public leak of her personal details in the FIR.
The court mandated Anna University to provide the survivor free education, along with boarding, lodging, and counseling support to ensure her studies are not interrupted.
The FIR’s victim-blaming language and its publication online were strongly condemned by the court, which emphasized the need for gender-sensitive policing and justice delivery.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also launched a fact-finding investigation and will visit Chennai to meet the survivor and her family.
