Madlanga Inquiry Pauses as Khumalo Falls Ill During WhatsApp Evidence on Alleged Cartel Links

The crime intelligence chief had been detailing seized WhatsApp chats that investigators say connect Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala with Brown Mogotsi plus a contact saved as Senzo Mchunu.

Overview

  • Proceedings were adjourned on Wednesday after Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo reported feeling unwell, with SAPS saying he is receiving medical care and the commission to update on his return.
  • Khumalo had presented more than 400 WhatsApp messages taken from Matlala’s seized phones, including screenshots showing a number saved as “Senzo Mchunu” asking for updates and querying, “Was the arrest effected?”.
  • According to Khumalo’s analysis, the chats depict attempts to use IPID after December raids to construct an assault case and to recover seized firearms, with references to a “25%” payment linked to political facilitation.
  • The records show Matlala paid for flights for eight people to attend the ANC Progressive Business Forum gala before January 8 celebrations, while declining Mogotsi’s request for an additional R200,000 table purchase.
  • Khumalo also alleged that KZN Hawks head Maj-Gen Lesetja Senona leaked confidential SAPS information to Matlala and outlined a “Big Five” network that includes Matlala and Katiso “KT” Molefe, with further details to be heard in camera.
