Madlanga Commission Hears New Evidence of Alleged Police Interference and Cartel Links

CCTV alongside sworn testimony now anchors the Commission’s probe into alleged obstruction and collusion.

Overview

  • Crime Intelligence presented CCTV showing a SAPS BMW allocated to Shadrack Sibiya’s office entering Katiso Molefe’s property on 27 November 2024 and Sgt FE Nkosi leaving with a white paper bag.
  • Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo alleged obstruction of justice by certain Hawks members, JMPD officer Johannes Mokgatle and Sgt Nkosi, and identified Booi/Boy Mthethwa as the person who activated the Hawks’ presence at Molefe’s home.
  • Khumalo testified that Sibiya sometimes uses a Toyota bakkie registered to bodyguard Stuart James Scharnick, who has multiple convictions, noting the matter remains under investigation.
  • Hawks divisional commissioner Lt-Gen Patrick Mbotho said he acted on a tip relayed by former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya and instructed that a nearby unmarked vehicle discreetly verify the scene, while W/O Sabelo Nkosi described confusion, WhatsApp mobilization and an unnecessary diversion from a separate high-risk operation.
  • Police opened an attempted murder investigation after shots were fired at Commission witness Brown Mogotsi’s car in Vosloorus, and the Commission voiced concern for witness safety.
