Madhya Pradesh Reports Over 23,000 Women and Girls Missing as 1,500 Suspects Remain at Large

Overview

  • As of June 30, 2025, state records list 23,129 untraced females, including 21,175 women and 1,954 girls missing for more than a year
  • More than 1,500 accused in rape, sexual assault, abduction and disappearance cases are still evading arrest, with 292 suspects linked to adult rape and 283 to minor rape
  • At least 30 districts report over 500 missing women and girls each, with Sagar, Jabalpur, Indore and rural Bhopal emerging as the worst-affected areas
  • The data was presented in response to Congress MLA Bala Bachchan’s queries during the July 29–30 Vidhan Sabha session
  • Opposition members are pressing for firm arrest timelines and accountability measures to address policing and investigative shortcomings
