Overview

  • Between January 2020 and July 15, 2025, authorities registered 283 cases under the anti-conversion law.
  • Courts acquitted defendants in 50 of the 86 concluded trials, secured only seven convictions and recorded one mutual compromise.
  • Indore and Bhopal account for the largest caseloads with 74 and 33 cases respectively in the tribal-dominated Malwa-Nimar region.
  • Senior police officials attribute the low conviction rate to weak evidence and witnesses retracting testimony during proceedings.
  • The state government formed the SIT in May to re-examine all filings under the law.
