Madhya Pradesh Forms SIT After 14 Child Deaths Tied to Contaminated Cough Syrup

Investigators will inspect the Tamil Nadu manufacturer following lab findings of diethylene glycol in a flagged Coldrif batch.

  • A 12-member Special Investigation Team led by SDOP Jitendra Singh Jat has been constituted and will visit Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Kancheepuram.
  • Tamil Nadu drug control reported diethylene glycol at 48.6% w/v in Coldrif Batch SR-13, declaring the sample adulterated.
  • Dr Praveen Soni has been arrested and suspended, and he and the manufacturer face charges under BNS sections 105 and 276.
  • Madhya Pradesh banned Coldrif, and authorities in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh ordered immediate halts to sale and use and began sweeping stock checks.
  • Officials said the last victim’s body was exhumed for post-mortem, compensation of Rs 4 lakh per family was transferred, eight children remain under treatment in Nagpur, and two further deaths in Betul were reported by local health officials.
