Madhya Pradesh Cancels Ujjain Land Pooling Plans for Simhastha 2028

A looming BKS agitation prompted the state to scrap Ujjain town development schemes tied to Simhastha 2028.

Overview

  • A late-night Urban Development and Housing Department order fully revoked Ujjain Development Authority town development schemes 8, 9, 10, and 11 under the Madhya Pradesh Town and Country Planning Act, 1973.
  • The government scrapped its November 17 amendment that limited acquisitions to roads and drainage after farmer groups said the move misled them.
  • The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh had announced an indefinite sit-in from December 26 and mobilised leaders from 18 districts after earlier rallies and meetings.
  • BJP MLA Anil Jain Kaluhera publicly urged Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to cancel the plan and said he would join the farmers if protests went ahead.
  • The 2024 proposal targeted about 2,378 hectares across 17 villages, potentially affecting 5,000 to 8,000 farmer families, and envisioned roughly Rs 2,000 crore of permanent infrastructure, so officials now must revisit Simhastha preparations without land pooling.
