Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to Sign Agreement on Groundbreaking Tapti Basin Recharge Project
The project, hailed as the world's largest groundwater recharge initiative, aims to improve irrigation and water access across both states without displacing local communities.
- The Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project is a joint effort between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to enhance irrigation, groundwater recharge, and water conservation.
- The project will irrigate over 1.23 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh and 2.34 lakh hectares in Maharashtra, benefiting farmers and local communities.
- A total of 31.13 TMC of water will be utilized, with 11.76 TMC allocated to Madhya Pradesh and 19.36 TMC to Maharashtra, under a water-sharing agreement.
- The initiative has been redesigned as a groundwater recharge model to minimize environmental impact and avoid displacement of villages.
- The Madhya Pradesh government plans to request the Centre to designate the project as a National Water Project to secure additional support and recognition.
