Macron Unveils Lecornu’s 18-Member Cabinet as New French Government Takes Office

Lecornu now must secure votes for the year-end budget in a hung National Assembly.

Overview

  • The Élysée confirmed 18 ministers and set the first Council of Ministers for Monday at 4 p.m., with the prime minister’s general policy speech scheduled for Tuesday before the National Assembly.
  • Roland Lescure was named minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire moved to the Armed Forces, Jean-Noël Barrot stayed at Foreign Affairs, and Bruno Retailleau remained at the Interior.
  • Other appointments include Gérald Darmanin to Justice, Élisabeth Borne to National Education, Manuel Valls to Overseas Territories, and Rachida Dati to Culture.
  • Lecornu presented the team as a blend of continuity and renewal, with roughly a third of ministers not in the previous government, and set passage of the 2025 budget by year-end as the first objective.
  • Operating without a majority, the government faces censure threats as Jordan Bardella and Jean‑Luc Mélenchon denounced the lineup and predicted it will not last.
