Overview

  • Macron moved up the target date for doubling France’s military spending from 2030 to 2027, setting an annual budget goal of €64 billion.
  • He earmarked an additional €3.5 billion for 2026 and €3 billion for 2027 to meet the accelerated timetable.
  • The president linked the funding boost to ramped-up domestic economic activity and industrial output to reinforce financial independence.
  • He directed top military and defense officials to launch a strategic dialogue with European partners on the role of France’s nuclear arsenal in continental defense.
  • A new National Strategic Review, to be published this week, is expected to formalize these shifts and reset France’s defense posture for the coming decade.
