Mac Jones Leads 49ers to OT Win Over Rams, Raising Quarterback Questions

The backup is 3-0 with the 4-1 49ers atop the NFC West, Purdy still day-to-day, Jones publicly deferring to the starter.

Overview

  • Jones went 33-of-49 for 342 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, guiding an overtime drive to Eddy Piñeiro’s 41-yard winner after a 59-yarder in the fourth, as San Francisco improved to 4-1.
  • He is 3-0 filling in for Brock Purdy and has 905 yards and six touchdowns across three starts, tying Jim Plunkett for the most TDs by a 49er in his first three games with the team.
  • Head coach Kyle Shanahan lauded the performance, saying Jones “played his ass off” and protected the ball against a highly rated Rams defense.
  • Jones played through a knee issue and forearm cramps while the 49ers prevailed without several regulars, including George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings.
  • Teammates Trent Williams and Kendrick Bourne praised Jones’ toughness and composure, and Jones downplayed any quarterback debate by saying he is “just trying to get some wins” for Purdy.
