M6.9 Quake off Aomori Triggers Tsunami Advisories and Coastal Evacuations

The quake struck during a HokkaidoSanriku aftershock caution that runs through December 16.

Overview

  • The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami advisories from central Hokkaido to Miyagi and measured about 20 centimeters at Erimo and Hachinohe port.
  • Hachinohe ordered evacuations and opened nine shelters, Kesennuma opened 19 sites, Hokkaido opened 31 with 239 evacuees, and Otsuchi hosted 172 people across eight locations.
  • Service on the Tohoku Shinkansen between Sendai and Shin-Aomori was temporarily halted by a power outage, and NTT East reported no collapse risk for a previously damaged tower in Hachinohe.
  • Authorities counted 34 earthquakes of intensity 1 or greater since December 8 and did not issue a new aftershock caution because the latest event did not meet the criteria.
  • Residents in coastal areas moved to higher ground or stayed in cars to monitor updates, and some criticized disaster broadcasts as difficult to hear indoors.
