M62 Reopens After Morning Crash as Separate M6 Collisions Snarl Traffic

National Highways reported lanes back open on the M62, with later M6 incidents causing fresh closures and long delays.

Overview

  • The M62 eastbound near J11 at Birchwood had one lane closed after a crash shortly after 7am, with queues back to J8 and knock-on delays on the M6 southbound between J21A and J22.
  • National Highways advised the M62 disruption would clear between 9:15 and 9:30, and by about 9:02 all lanes had reopened although residual congestion persisted.
  • Cheshire Police said they were not called to the M62 incident, which was managed by National Highways, and delays of 10–30 minutes were reported by traffic monitors.
  • A separate serious collision near J45 where the M6 becomes the A74(M) led to a closure in Cumbria to allow emergency services to attend, with delays reported between J43 and J45.
  • Later in the afternoon, a three-vehicle crash on the M6 northbound between J19 and J20 left a car on its side, closed two lanes, created around six miles of queues, and prompted a Cheshire Police response.
